Outreach Associate

DC Vote is seeking an Outreach Associate to spearhead our student outreach initiatives as well as to assist the Outreach Director with the organization's coalition and advocacy work. Our organization is working to secure voting representation in Congress for DC residents. We are closer now to achieving our goal than at any time in the last 30 years. Our success is due to the work of a fabulous staff of highly energized, talented people who are dedicated to excellence.

We are also a fun-loving and supportive group. We are looking for a hard-working person with proven student organizing capabilities, excellent written and verbal communications skills, and an outgoing personality. A college degree is required. Persistence, the ability to multi-task and adapt easily to a variety of circumstances, and demonstrated sound judgment are essential. DC Vote provides a very generous employee benefits package. The Outreach Associate candidate will be responsible for:

  • Spearheading DC Vote's ongoing efforts to ensure that the subject of DC Voting Rights is taught in the DC Public Schools:
    • Update, market, and build support for DC Vote's Lesson Plan among educators across the District
    • Visit classrooms and schools across the city to help facilitate lessons on DC Voting Rights
    • Plan, implement and build partners in support of a city-wide arts and humanities contest on DC Voting Rights
    • Strengthen our relationship with DC Public Schools, DC Public Charter Schools and education oriented organizations
    • Collaborate with public and private schools to increase awareness of DC voting rights

  • Coordinating and Expanding Students for DC Vote:
    • Facilitate outreach and organizing efforts targeting college and high school students through DC Vote's student arm, Students for DC Vote
    • Plan and run Students for DC Vote events including the annual Summer Send Off and Winter Kick Off
    • Attend local student-oriented events, speak about DC voting rights and host tables and recruit Students for DC Vote
    • Work with interns to increase Students for DC Vote's online outreach through the Students for DC Vote Web site, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube

  • Supporting Outreach Director in Coalition Outreach:
    • Work to support advocacy and outreach efforts
    • Add youth organizations to the DC voting rights coalition
    • Monitor coalition meetings and conference calls, track coalition commitments and follow up as appropriate
    • Assist with coalition meeting notification e-mails and maintenance of coalition meeting calendar
    • Helping to maintain and expand DC Vote's database of coalition partners

  • General Outreach:
    • Assisting with planning and implementing general outreach events including creating and sending e-mail notice, securing and coordinating volunteers, and providing with event follow-up
    • Help Outreach Director with day-to-day administrative duties including photocopying, proofreading and the development of informational tools

Additional Qualifications:

  • Interest in and commitment to the work of helping to spread democracy to the residents of the District of Columbia
  • Outgoing personality and comfort with public speaking
  • Ability to adapt easily to a variety of circumstances and be quick on your feet
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to multi-task and deal with a number of different projects at once
  • Must have the ability to be persistent and follow through with educators who are often hard to reach
  • Must work well both independently and as part of a tight-knit team
  • HTML experience and some familiarity with web development a plus
  • Familiarity with the DC Public School system and lesson plan creation, distribution and implementation a definite plus
